We are a community run library and community hub in Dane Bank, Denton. As well as regular library services such as book borrowing, computer access, photocopying and printing, we also have activities such as a choir, knit and natter group, yoga, community cinema, rhyme time, regular arts, crafts and creative activities and other events throughout the year.
The Friends of Denton West End Library was formed in August 2012, in direct response to the threatened closure of the existing library, located on the corner of Hulme Road, and Windsor Road, Dane Bank, Denton.
None of Tameside MBC's library proposals included within the 'Big Conversation' for the retention of the existing library. The Friends group was formed to challenge, seek extension to the closure, and request gifting of the library to the community.
The library has provided hundreds of children the enjoyment of reading and provided hundreds of adults and elderly people the ability to learn computer skills and have a place to socialise over the last 50 years. Not only is it a place for people to go but it provides many group sessions from story time to adult learning classes in the evening.
On 28th June 2013 the newly formed charity 'Denton West End Community Library' (1150775) completed purchase of the building from Tameside MBC, and provides a complete Library and Community Service.
The Community successfully acquired the library in June 2013. The Trustees of Denton West End Community Library would like to thank you for your support. After lengthy negotiations with the council the charity trustees have funded the purchase of the library with a business loan. The estimated monthly cost for the running and upkeep of the library is over £1,650.00. This will keep the doors open. The library is no longer funded by Tameside Council or your council tax payments.
The charity, with the support of the Friends Group offer a complete Community run library service, independant of any Local Authority Funding or Support.
Without the suppport of the Community, dedicated volunteers, regular donation, and fund raising events, none of this would of been possible. Long term success depends on maintaining and encouraging the Community to be involved.
We are a completely self-funded charity and receive no regular income from the local authority. We rely on the generousity and support of our local community to keep the library running.
If you would like to donate please click here to make a donation through 'LOCAL GIVING'.
We receive gift aid tax relief for donations made by UK taxpayers and any donation you make goes back in to providing services and activities for the local community.
